What to do during an earthquake

  • Indoors: drop, cover your head and neck, and hold on under a sturdy table or against an inner wall until the shaking stops.
  • Do not run for the exit and do not use the lift.
  • Outdoors: move away from buildings, walls, poles and cables.
  • Afterwards expect aftershocks, check for injured people, gas smell and damage before going back inside.

Questions about earthquakes in Bosnia and Herzegovina

How often do earthquakes happen in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

In the last 12 months we recorded 134 earthquakes of magnitude 2 or more in Bosnia and Herzegovina and up to 37 mi around it, 41 of them magnitude 3 or more. Most are not felt.

Where does the data come from and how accurate is it?

Locations and magnitudes come from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), with USGS values added where it reports the same event. The first values are automatic and can change within hours. Official data is published by the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute (FHMZ).

Why do magnitudes differ between sources?

Each centre computes magnitude from its own stations and method. Differences of 0.1 to 0.3 are normal. We show the EMSC value and, when available, the USGS value.

Where can I report that I felt an earthquake?

EMSC collects felt reports on emsc-csem.org and in its LastQuake app. USGS collects them as "Did you feel it?" reports on earthquake.usgs.gov.
